"The first recorded description of the social interactions that could be enabled through networking was a series of memos written by J.C.R. Licklider of MIT in August 1962 discussing his "Galactic Network" concept. He envisioned a globally interconnected set of computers through which everyone could quickly access data and programs from any site. In spirit, the concept was very much like the Internet of today...

In Placing Sense the artists were invited to make proposals for site-specific artworks based on documentation of a location in Helsinki. The artworks were not be realized on the actual location but were presented first as montages, sketches or texts on the PS web site and then as installations, videos or other visual material in MUU gallery.

The documentation of the locations consisted of images and maps. The locations are selected by a young Danish artists Morten Hebsgaard who is also participating in the exhibition. The given material served as a reference to an existing place and created a possibility for the artists to make a virtual journey to the location. Some of the artists could also visit the documented sites in person. The others had to rely on the given documentation and had to use their imagination to fill in the gaps which the documentation leaves, making the starting point for their work a sum of facts and fiction.

Some of the artists will make a picnic-presentation for the public on the sites which were the starting point for their artwork in Helsinki.

The background:
In a meeting in 2004 organized by Site-ations International-organization in Riga Latvia a proposition was made for KUTEN to participate as the Finnish partner in the Site-ations 2005-project titled ”Sense in Place”. How ever the project was too big for KUTEN to operate, so we decided to support "Sense in Place" with our own sideshow "Placing Sense" instead.

Placing Sense is organized by KUTEN association for promoting visual culture in collaboration with artists association MUU.
